Nov 10, · Creative Arabic Calligraphy for Beginners: Introduction Kufic was the first Arabic script to be made consciously beautiful. These were still days when those in charge of reciting the Qur'an knew it by heart, so the practical aspect of legibility was of secondary concern: much more important was the sheer beauty of the text, its balance. Further studies showed that at the advent of Islam Naskh was main script, not a branch of Kufic script. Naskh was emerged as a result of the inflexibility of Kufic and due to its free hand style. It is still being used for copying the Holy Quran. Naskh is a cursive style with roundness in its characters. The Ottoman Turks also considered Naskh the script most suited for copying the Quran. Today, more Qurans are copied in Naskh throughout the Islamic world than in all other Arabic scripts combined. For centuries, novice Arabic calligraphers have learned the skills of this noble art by practising writing Naskh first, a tradition that continues today.
