Podcast - How to Build a Custom ADMX File

In this second podcast on Windows Group Policy, we go over the process of building a custom ADMX file. We'll relate the differences and the similarities between the old ADM format and the new ADMX format, and we'll discuss some known pitfalls with creating XML.

For this podcast, we'll be looking at Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 918239 as our example. you can access this KB article at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918239

Storage Virtualization Rocks

Many years ago I remember a shall-remain-nameless company showing up at the door of my former employer to discuss some vaporware technology they were in the process of building. This technology would "virtualize" storage by adding another layer on top of the physical SAN. That layer would be able to do hot data migrations between disparate SAN's, near-instant storage provisioning, data snapshotting that enables zero-time backup windows, and a whole host of other capabilities that no one in the room really believed possible.

Silly us. We sent that company on it's way.

Having gotten out of SAN administration for a while now, I picked up this week's InfoWorld and noticed that those very same features are now out of the vaporware phase and fully in production. It is truly possible to migrate full data volumes from one SAN to another with no downtime due to point-in-time snapshotting as well as eliminating backup windows using the same technology.

What's truly interesting is that this technology is eeking out of the Tier 3 SAN providers into those at a much lower cost. If the idea of a Fibre Channel SAN freaks out your budget, you can now get some of the very same features within a significantly cheaper iSCSI-based SAN as well.

The InfoWorld article is worth a read at:

Peaking my interest, I attended a seminar by one of the lower-cost iSCSI SAN providers, Left Hand Networks, on their ability to do the features mentioned above. Pretty impressive, and at a much lower cost than FC SAN's. Interestingly enough, the person running the webinar also told me that with enough NIC teaming iSCSI SAN's could reach the same speed as those using Fibre Channel.

Left Hand will be re-running their presentation tomorrow, 2/21, on iSCSI SAN's and how storage virtualization and server virtualization relate. Check it out at: http://www.lefthandnetworks.com/cmp.php?cid=36&rid=LFTHND-01&h=53&m=1&cook=1

Ending the Patching Nightmare?

I'm not easily excited about new technologies. We Windows administrators get deluged in new products every day that proport to change everything. But, more often than not, those products are just a new spins on an old idea.

Late last week, however I had the pleasure of seeing the plans for two new technologies that blew me away. We'll talk about the second technology tomorrow. But the first is definitely one to keep your eye on.

Do you hate the monthly patching grind? Does the sky-is-falling-drop-everything-and-patch-now routine of the regular patch cycle drive you nuts and keep you away from home, life, wife, and kids?

Imagine a technology that would help stop the madness and allow you to patch your systems when you were tested and ready. And even then, on your schedule and not the vendor's.

Sound interesting? Continue reading...

Detection issue with MS07-009 on Windows 2000 SP4

Rod Trent's MyITForum web site posts this morning that Microsoft is recognizing a known issue with detection for last Tuesday's MS07-009 patch.

From his blog...

"...I wanted to call your attention to a minor issue around detection with today’s updates. Specifically, there’s a minor issue around detection and MS07-009. Windows 2000 SP4 customers who have applied this security update and then perform a scan using MBSA, SMS2003 with the ITMU, or WSUS will get a report back erroneously saying that all languages were applied rather than just the language versions that were applied."

LiveBlogging from Office/Vista/Exchange Launch in Denver II

Exchange 2007 includes some interesting pre-requisites:

- 64-bit. AMD 64 bit is supported but not the Itanium 64-bit
- Must also have PowerShell installed (this is a separate install)
- All other pre-requisites come with Server R2. If you have Server R2 64-bit installed and PowerShell you'll be ready for the install.
- Schema Master must be at R2

LOTS more info down there...

LiveBlogging from Office/Vista/Exchange Launch in Denver

I'm attending the Office/Vista/Exchange Launch event in Denver today and am taking some time to LiveBlog a few things from the event. In the bowels of this huge convention center, there's nothing to speak of in terms of wireless, but my new Sprint card means you get a (slow) connection anywhere.

So far, we're discussing Microsoft's Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) tools and the steps for deploying Vista desktops and packages over the top of Vista. A couple of interesting things learned so far:

First Windows Server Podcast - Introduction and Group Policy Central Store

Today's post is our first Windows Server Community podcast! In this podcast, I'll be introducing myself ("Hello. Nice to meech'a.") as well as discussing some of the changes to Group Policy that we now have to understand with the introduction of Windows Vista.

In this podcast, we'll talk about how to create a Group Policy Central Store in your Active Directory's SYSVOL. We'll talk at a high level about the changes to the ADM file format, moving from an INI file format to an XML file format. And, we'll talk about one freeware tool in particular released by Microsoft that'll help you migrate your custom ADM files to the new ADMX file format.

Daylight Savings is not Saving Time

In 2005 the federal government pass the US Energy Policy Act of 2005 that changed the dates on Daylight Savings time in an attempt to provide more daylight time and reduce the costs of energy. It's a great thing if you hate the long darkness of winter, but it's a bad thing if you administer Windows operating systems that are out of the mainstream support with Microsoft.

For users of Windows 2000 and below, making the DST change was going to involve some clever hacking becuase the much-needed patches from Microsoft weren't likely to arrive...
